In a significant escalation of the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China, Beijing has instructed its airlines to suspend further deliveries of Boeing aircraft and halt purchases of aircraft parts from U.S. companies. This directive comes in response to the U.S. imposing 145% tariffs on Chinese goods, prompting China to raise its own tariffs on U.S. imports to 125% .

The suspension is expected to increase maintenance costs for existing Boeing aircraft within China, as airlines will now face challenges in sourcing necessary parts.
The move also signals a potential shift in China’s aviation industry, with airlines possibly turning to alternative suppliers such as Airbus and domestic manufacturer COMAC. Notably, China’s major carriers like Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern had collectively planned to receive 179 Boeing planes between 2025 and 2027;
Boeing, which considers China a crucial growth market, saw its shares fall by 3% following the announcement. The company has not yet issued a public response to the directive.
Analysts warn that the continuing tit-for-tat tariffs could bring U.S.-China trade, valued at over $650 billion in 2024, to a halt. President Trump has indicated openness to a resolution, though no deal has been finalized.
As the trade war intensifies, the global aviation industry watches closely, anticipating further developments that could reshape international aircraft manufacturing and sales dynamics.
