The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that it will resume using the term “Notice to Airmen” (NOTAM) instead of the more recent “Notice to Air Missions.” This decision marks a return to the traditional terminology widely recognized by pilots and aviation professionals.

The FAA originally changed the term to “Notice to Air Missions” in December 2021 as part of an effort to make aviation language more inclusive. However, following industry feedback and ongoing discussions within the aviation community, the agency has decided to revert to the original terminology. The change is expected to reduce confusion and align with the longstanding terminology used in international aviation.
In addition to this revision, the FAA has updated terminology on pilot charts. The Gulf of America will now be referenced on aeronautical charts, and Mt. McKinley will once again replace the name Denali in aviation publications. These updates reflect a broader effort to standardize navigational references in line with historical aviation usage.
The FAA has not specified an exact timeline for when these changes will take full effect, but pilots and industry professionals can expect to see the updates in upcoming publications and system revisions.
