The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in coordination with the Naval Sea Systems Command Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV), successfully recovered the wreckage of the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter involved in the tragic mid-air collision near Reagan National Airport on January 29, 2025.

The recovery operation, which took place along the Potomac River, is a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the collision that claimed the lives of all 67 people on board both aircraft. The wreckage will be transported to a secure location for further examination and analysis.

The NTSB has been working diligently to piece together the events leading up to the accident. The recovered Black Hawk, along with parts of the American Airlines Bombardier CRJ700, will undergo detailed inspection to determine the cause of the collision. Investigators are also transcribing the cockpit voice recorders and synchronizing the flight data recorders from both aircraft.

The NTSB and SUPSALV teams continue to search for additional parts of the Black Hawk, including the right engine and tail rotor. The investigation is expected to take several weeks, with updates provided as new information becomes available.

Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time. The NTSB remains committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.
