Qatar Airways Resumes Flights to Syria After 13-Year Hiatus

Qatar Airways has announced the resumption of flights to Syria after a 13-year hiatus. Starting January 7, 2025, the airline will operate three weekly flights to Damascus, Syria.

The decision to restart operations comes after a prolonged suspension due to the Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011. The resumption of flights is seen as a step towards normalizing relations and fostering regional connectivity.

Qatar Airways’ Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, expressed his enthusiasm, stating,

"We are pleased to resume flights to Damascus, a destination of great historical and cultural importance. This announcement underscores our dedication to fostering connectivity and facilitating travel for our passengers"

The thrice-weekly service will provide passengers with seamless access to Qatar Airways’ extensive global network of more than 170 destinations via its hub in Doha.

The relaunch of flights to Damascus is a testament to Qatar Airways’ resilience and adaptability in the face of geopolitical challenges. As the first of the ME3 carriers to resume flights to Syria, Qatar Airways is setting a precedent for other airlines in the region. This development is likely to encourage other international carriers to reconsider their operations in Syria, potentially leading to increased connectivity and economic revitalization.
