The highly anticipated opening of the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been rescheduled for July 2025. This decision follows recommendations from the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) to ensure a flawless experience for all passengers.
The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) announced that the new terminal is currently 85% complete. While part of the terminal could potentially be operational this year, the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) advised against a premature opening to avoid potential disruptions caused by technical issues.
MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed explained, "Technically, part of the terminal is ready. However, the AOC recommended delaying the opening to ensure all technical details are addressed, guaranteeing a smooth and successful launch".
The new terminal at VIA is a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the airport’s capacity and improving the overall passenger experience. Once completed, it will significantly boost the airport’s ability to handle the increasing number of tourists visiting the Maldives, further solidifying the country’s status as a premier global travel destination.
The AOC, a key advisory body representing airlines operating in the Maldives, plays an essential role in ensuring the best possible airport operations. Their guidance has been instrumental in the decision to delay the terminal’s opening, ensuring that all aspects of the project meet the highest standards of quality and safety.
With the revised timeline, the new terminal is expected to be fully operational by mid-2025, just in time for the peak tourism season. This delay will allow MACL to address any remaining technical issues and ensure that the terminal is ready to provide a seamless and enhanced travel experience for all passengers
