In a significant move to bolster its fleet, Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s new premium international airline, has placed a firm order for 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft. This landmark deal was announced at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference in Riyadh on October 30, 2024.
The order marks a strategic investment for Riyadh Air, which aims to commence passenger flights next summer. The A321neo, the largest member of Airbus’ best-selling A320neo family, is renowned for its exceptional efficiency, range, and passenger comfort. By incorporating new generation engines and Sharklets, the A321neo offers a 50% noise reduction and more than 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft.
Tony Douglas, CEO of Riyadh Air, emphasized the importance of this investment in supporting economic growth within the aviation industry and contributing to Saudi Arabia’s decarbonisation goals.
“This investment will not only enable us to support economic growth in the aviation industry, but it will also ensure Riyadh Air operates one of the most fuel-efficient fleets,” Douglas stated. "It will be instrumental in helping Saudi Arabia achieve its decarbonisation goals".
The deal is expected to have a positive economic impact on both a global and local scale, facilitating the fast-growing Saudi aviation ecosystem. Christian Scherer, CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, expressed pride in welcoming Riyadh Air as a new Airbus customer and partner.
“The latest generation A321neo aircraft will bring exceptional efficiency to the airline’s operations, concrete contributions to its decarbonisation goals, and comfort to its passengers,” Scherer said.
Riyadh Air’s order for the A321neo is part of a broader strategy to expand its fleet and enhance its operational capabilities. The airline, backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, aims to fly around 200 jets within five years of launching operations, targeting a fleet size that supports its ambitious growth plans.
This order follows Riyadh Air’s previous purchase of up to 72 Boeing 787-9s, highlighting the airline’s commitment to building a diverse and efficient fleet. The first A321neo is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2026.
