SAM Air Twin Otter Crash Kills Four in Indonesia

A SAM Air de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter 300, registered PK-SMH, tragically crashed this morning while on approach to Bumi Panua Pohuwato Airport. The Twin Otter, carrying three crew members and one passenger, was nearing its destination when it crashed into a rice field close to the airport. All four occupants on board were killed instantly.

The SAM Air de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter 300, registered PK-SMH, was manufactured in 1980 and powered by P&W Canada PT6A-27 engines. On the morning of October 20, 2024, it departed from Gorontalo-Jalaluddin Airport (GTO/WAMG) at 07:02 local time, bound for Bumi Panua Pohuwato Airport (WAFZ).


The aircraft was on a scheduled passenger flight with three crew members and one passenger on board. Tragically, the aircraft crashed during its approach to the destination, resulting in the loss of all four occupants. Initial reports suggest that the aircraft encountered technical difficulties during its approach.


SAM Air, officially known as PT Semuwa Aviasi Mandiri, operates primarily in remote regions of Indonesia, providing essential air services to areas that are otherwise difficult to access. The airline has a fleet of Twin Otter aircraft, known for their reliability and capability to operate in challenging environments.
