An agreement has been signed to construct Taxiway Charlie at Velana International Airport (VIA). This project aims to enhance the airport’s operational efficiency and capacity, aligning with the broader vision of transforming VIA into a premier aviation hub.
The agreement was signed between Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and China’s Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), which has been awarded the contract to repair the first runway and current taxiway at Velana International Airport.
The project, named “Taxiway Charlie Rebuild,” aligns with the vision of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the 20-year masterplan for the development of Velana International Airport and the Economic Zone. The project was officially handed over at a ceremony held at the airport today.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed highlighted the significance of the project. He noted that the former runway and existing taxiway are the oldest infrastructure at the airport, built in 1976, and their rehabilitation is critical for both safety and economic reasons, providing a large boost to the economy.
At present taxiway Charlie is originally the older runway of VIA that run parallel to the existing runways, providing an faster route for aircraft to taxi to and from the terminals and runways. This taxiway streamlines aircraft movements on the ground, reducing congestion and improving turnaround times.
The taxiway allows for a significant increase the airport’s capacity to handle more flights, especially during peak hours. This is crucial for accommodating the growing number of tourists visiting the Maldives.
