Maldives Parliament Proposes New Airport Departure Tax Rates

The Parliament has proposed adjustments to the Airport Departure Tax and the Airport Development Fee with significant changes in fee charges.

The Maldives airport tax system, initially launched as the Airport Service Charge (ASC) was the primary fee levied on passengers departing from Maldivian airports. This charge was set at USD 25 for foreign passengers and USD 12 for Maldivian passengers. However, this system was changed with the introduction of the Airport Taxes and Fees Act on December 7, 2016.

The increased taxes will to lead to higher ticket prices which would affect travelers specially budget travelers. Higher travel costs could deter tourism and business travel, potentially offsetting the benefits.

Balancing the need for revenue with the potential impact on travelers is crucial to ensure that the aviation sector thrives without placing undue financial strain on passengers.

Ensuring that the aviation sector remains competitive and passenger-friendly requires careful consideration of both the immediate financial impacts and the long-term benefits.

A thoughtful and balanced approach to airport tax adjustments can help secure the future of the aviation industry without compromising the affordability and convenience of air travel.
