Riyadh Air, the Saudi Arabia new national carrier, has commenced its first non-commercial flights as part of the certification process. These flights are crucial for obtaining the Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), enabling the airline to begin commercial operations.
On September 12, 2024, Riyadh Air operated its inaugural non-commercial flight from King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Riyadh to King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah.
Riyadh Air plans to utilize a fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with 39 aircraft on order and options for an additional 33. These aircraft will serve medium and long-haul routes, complementing the services of Saudia, the established national carrier.
In preparation for its commercial launch in 2025, Riyadh Air has been actively forming strategic partnerships. Recent agreements with Singapore Airlines, Air China, and Virgin Atlantic.
Launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in March 2023, Riyadh Air is a key component of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative. This ambitious plan aims to transform the Kingdom into a global aviation hub, with new airports, expanded fleets, and increased connectivity to over 250 destinations.
